Resources and access should be shared, no matter your privilege. Communities become stronger when it is easier for people to find one another, communicate effectively, and collaborate to strengthen the systems around them. By working together, we can reduce gaps, remove barriers, and build a more connected community where people are better able to help one another.
Community Rolodex exists to make local knowledge, resources, relationships, and opportunities easier to access and share. We believe everyone has something valuable to contribute, whether that is professional expertise, financial resources, community relationships, lived experience, practical knowledge, or simply a willingness to help someone else find their next step.
Our goal is not to divide people into those who have and those who need. Most people will move between both roles at different points in their lives. We want to help create a community where people can both give and receive, where lived experience is valued alongside professional knowledge, and where people have clearer ways to connect with resources, opportunities, and one another.
Community Rolodex brings these pieces together through resource navigation, human support, groups, community partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and shared learning. At the center of the work is a simple belief: a stronger community is built by asking what each of us has that might help someone else.
Our Philosophy
At Community Rolodex, we believe stronger communities are built through relationships. A directory, website, or search result may provide information, but information alone does not always help someone understand where to begin, work through barriers, decide which option makes sense, or know what to do when a referral does not work.
That is why Community Rolodex is being built around both resources and navigation. Technology can help organize a large amount of information behind the scenes, while human judgment, community knowledge, lived experience, and professional expertise help make that information more useful. The goal is not to make the public experience more complicated. It is to make the systems behind it stronger so the experience for the person asking for help can remain simple, respectful, and human.
Built to Learn
Community needs are always changing. Programs close, eligibility requirements shift, waitlists grow, new services emerge, and barriers may not become visible until someone actually tries to use a resource. Because of that, Community Rolodex is not being built as a static directory that assumes information stays accurate once it has been collected.
The project is currently in a pilot and development stage. We are learning from real navigation experiences, community feedback, partner relationships, group participation, referral outcomes, and the experiences of people trying to access services. That information helps us better understand what is working, where people are getting stuck, and what may need to change.
We do not expect the resource system to be perfect. Instead, we are committed to verifying information, correcting mistakes, learning from experience, and improving the system over time.
Responsible Technology
Technology can help Community Rolodex organize resources, identify duplication, support follow-up, track changing information, and make community knowledge easier to maintain. Used well, it can reduce unnecessary administrative work and make it easier to see patterns that may otherwise be missed.
At the same time, technology should not replace human judgment, lived experience, professional expertise, consent, or responsible review. Community Rolodex is being designed so technology supports the work rather than becoming the work itself. People, relationships, context, and thoughtful decision-making remain at the center.
Neutrality & Ethics
Community Rolodex does not sell referrals, rankings, endorsements, or preferred placement. Donations, sponsorships, grants, and future contracts may help support navigation, groups, technology, staffing, evaluation, or broader community access, but financial relationships do not determine which resources are recommended to a person.
Recommendations should be based on the individual, their circumstances, available information, practical barriers, and what appears to be a realistic fit. We also want to strengthen and support existing organizations rather than unnecessarily competing with them. Community Rolodex is intended to help people connect more effectively with the services and relationships that already exist while also helping identify where meaningful gaps remain.
Privacy & Responsible Data Use
As Community Rolodex develops, we are building clear practices around consent, privacy, data minimization, documentation, and responsible information handling. Different partnerships and types of navigation may require different levels of information, so our goal is to collect only what is useful and appropriate for the purpose at hand.
We will continue developing safeguards as the project grows and will be transparent about what systems and protections are actually in place. We do not want to claim capabilities, security standards, or protections before they have been fully implemented.
Our Guiding Principles
Our work is guided by the belief that relationships should come before resources and that people should remain active participants in their own navigation. Human judgment should come before automation, and both lived experience and professional expertise should be treated as valuable sources of knowledge.
We believe community knowledge can strengthen formal systems, especially when it helps reveal barriers that may not be visible on paper. Simplicity matters when people are overwhelmed, recommendations should remain independent of who funds the work, and collaboration should strengthen existing organizations rather than compete with them unnecessarily.
We also believe there is value in being honest about what we do not know. Community Rolodex is committed to learning, verifying, correcting, and improving instead of pretending information is perfect. Just as importantly, community members should have meaningful opportunities to both receive support and contribute something valuable to others.
Our Culture
Relationships are at the heart of Community Rolodex. We want to create a welcoming, respectful, curious, and collaborative environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing knowledge, identifying gaps, and contributing ideas. Community members, professionals, organizations, volunteers, and people with lived experience should all have a meaningful place in the conversation.
Humility is an important part of that culture. No individual, organization, professional, or technology platform has every answer. Stronger systems are built when people are willing to listen across different experiences, learn from one another, communicate openly, and work together toward a shared purpose.
We want Community Rolodex to feel less like an institution people must figure out how to navigate and more like a community effort people can participate in. That means being approachable, transparent, thoughtful, and willing to change when the community teaches us something new.
Learning & Growth
Community Rolodex is being built carefully rather than all at once. Pilot partnerships, navigation experiences, groups, referral follow-up, community feedback, and professional relationships will help shape what grows next. Some ideas will work well, while others may need to be adjusted, simplified, or left behind.
We see that as a strength rather than a weakness. The goal is not to launch with every answer already decided. The goal is to build something useful enough to begin, thoughtful enough to learn from, and flexible enough to improve as the community tells us what is actually needed.
